Shanghai is where both completed trips began. The 2025 group of 20 stayed in the city for the week, with a day trip to Suzhou, and the 2026 group of 36 used it as the first leg of a three-city route. Because both completed trips began here, the first day is built around the arrival.
Arrival Day
The first day, built around a long flight
For a group of sixty the sample allows about ninety minutes from aircraft door to coach door, with two coaches meeting the flight and the luggage travelling with the group. A welcome lunch is taken near the hotel so that nobody is moved twice before checking in. The group is slow in the morning and fine in the evening for the first days, because of the time difference, so the first class session is held in the hotel in the late afternoon, for two hours, in a room with a screen and microphones. The day ends on the Bund, with the lights coming up on the far bank, and dinner in the streets behind it.
One thing to know
The Bund is very crowded on public holiday evenings. When the arrival date falls on one, the walk moves earlier or to the quieter Pudong side for the same view.

Choices
Zoo or safari park, and a museum unit
Shanghai has both a city zoo and a safari park, at opposite ends of the city. The sample uses the city zoo, because the afternoon ends in another city and the safari park would add about two hours of coach time to a travel day. The zoo confirms in writing before the group arrives, because the number of pandas on display changes.
Unit U8 on the curriculum page uses the Egyptian gallery of the Shanghai Museum. Students analyse how the gallery tells its story and compare it with a museum at home. It connects to IB TOK (knowledge and perspective) and AP Art History. The PreeChina page on things to do near the Shanghai Museum sets out the area around it.

The 2025 group spent the whole week in the city with a day in Suzhou. The 2026 group and the 2027 sample use one to two days at the start of a longer route.
Can a group visit a theme park?
Yes. Both completed trips included a theme park day. Express passes change what a group of sixty sees in a day, so that decision is taken early and the programme is priced both ways.
