How Student Groups Are Kept Safe in China

A student group is planned for the day that goes wrong as well as the day that goes well. This page describes how the programmes are built, what is confirmed in writing before a group travels, and seven situations from the early seasons.

How a programme is built for the group size

  • Two coaches for a group of sixty, with the group all week, and meals and sessions arranged as sittings of thirty where a venue cannot take sixty at once.
  • Rooms on one hotel floor, in adjacent rooms, requested for groups.
  • Travel days kept light. On the days with a long coach or rail leg, little else is added, and the departure morning holds nothing else.
  • Venues booked as groups, not as walk-ins, and confirmed in writing before departure.
  • The first day leaves room for rest after a long flight and a time difference of several hours.

A plan with a fallback

Each sample day names what is tight and what is optional, so that a teacher can see where the programme has slack and where it has none.

  • On the tightest day, a morning train with the visits moved to the previous afternoon is the stated alternative.
  • On the Beijing day that crosses the city twice, the evening walk is optional and a second coach takes back anyone who has had enough.
  • If the departure flight time changes, the last day and the day before it are rebuilt rather than squeezed.

See the sample itinerary.

What is confirmed in writing before a group travels

  • Hotel star rating, room count and meeting room against the school's brief.
  • Group seating and show times at venues that take a booking.
  • Group booking and visitor registration at museums and campuses.
  • Rail seats for the whole group on one service.
  • The arrival flight, before the priced itinerary and the invoice are issued.

Seven situations from the early seasons

A Russian language school has travelled with PreeChina in 2025 and 2026. These seven things happened during those trips. Each was resolved without anyone coming to harm. The school and the participants are not named.

SituationWhat happened
Plans and weatherA traffic jam meant the day's plan was changed on the day.
Plans and weatherRain began during a boat ride.
Plans and weatherParticipants asked to visit a temple that was not in the plan.
VenuesA restaurant started renovation work and could not seat the whole group.
PeopleA participant became separated from the group at a theme park in Shanghai.
PeopleA participant became unwell during the trip.
After the tripAfter the group had flown home, a phone and a wallet were found to have been left on a coach.

Why this is published

Schools receive many descriptions of trips that went well. A list of what went wrong, written plainly, tells a coordinator more about how a group is run.

A group together on the ground

These photographs from the 2026 trip show a group of thirty-six together on the ground: gathered on Main Street at a theme park, on the Bund, at a gate of the Forbidden City and on the Great Wall. They were taken by PreeChina.

What this page does not claim

This page describes how programmes are built and what has happened on them. It does not replace the written proposal for a particular group, which sets out the details for that route and those dates.
