Visiting the Great Wall of China

This page lists 48 places along China's Great Wall in 13 provinces and municipalities: 18 restored or original sections, 16 passes and forts, 4 early walls and ruins, and 9 Great Wall museums.

The Great Wall is also called the Wall of China. In Chinese it is Changcheng (长城), meaning “long wall”.

This page gathers information that changes rarely. Details were collected in October 2026 and may have changed since. Tickets, opening hours and reservations are not listed here, so contact each venue or check its official website for accurate information.

The Wall is a system of walls, towers, passes and forts built over more than two thousand years by many states and dynasties, not a single wall. Nine of the places below lie in Beijing. The map shows 44 of them with a pin, and the lists below open each city guide and the routes that include Wall stops.

UNESCO's 1987 World Heritage listing of the Great Wall covers three components: Badaling in Beijing, Shanhaiguan in Hebei and Jiayuguan in Gansu. Other sections, including Mutianyu, Simatai and Jinshanling, are protected heritage sites but lie outside that listing.

Jiankou, the unmanaged section north of Mutianyu, has been under protective repair since 2016. Huairou District said on 29 September 2026 that it aims to open a Jiankou visiting area by the end of the year. Until then the section is not a visitor site, and the district's announcements are the place to check for any opening.
