Why Visit Baotou?

Baotou Wudang Monastery whitewashed buildings climbing a mountain slope in the Yin Mountains blue sky Inner Mongolia

Baotou is a city of steel and rare earths, and it is a good place to see how northern China industrialized. The Baogang steelworks and the nearby Bayan Obo mine, one of the world's largest rare earth deposits, shaped the city in the twentieth century.

The mountains north of the city hold a different layer. Wudang Monastery, a Gelug Tibetan Buddhist complex built in the eighteenth century, sits in a valley of the Yin Mountains, and the Yin Mountain rock art records the lives of herding peoples thousands of years ago.

What the Guides Miss

1

A Steel Mill Built Against the Wind

Ore sat nearby, but the Baogang site had no water, and sandstorms refilled dug foundations overnight. On 19 January 1959 the People's Daily called on the whole country to support the plant. Workers from 22 provinces, 55 cities and 727 enterprises, more than 80,000 people, heated concrete with steam and piped Yellow River water from 20 kilometres away.

2

Roof Tiles from the Zhaowan Han Town

In the 1950s archaeologists dug the ruined Han town at Zhaowan and found roof tiles stamped "Shanyu he qin" (the Xiongnu ruler makes peace by marriage). Other tiles read "Shanyu tianjiang". Researchers infer that the town marks a stop on the route of Wang Zhaojun and Huhanye Shanyu, who grazed this valley for 8 years (51 to 43 BCE).
