Why Visit Jiuquan?

Jiuquan spring park ancient pavilion Han Dynasty style lush trees reflecting pond Hexi Corridor oasis morning calm

Jiuquan is an administrative prefecture, and that is the reason to read the map before booking. The city of Jiuquan itself is a quiet oasis town on the Hexi Corridor, but the prefecture runs west to include Dunhuang and the frontier country beyond it, which is where most visitors are really going.

The name is older than any of it. A Western Han tradition says the general Huo Qubing, after a victory over the Xiongnu, poured the emperor's gift of wine into a spring so that every soldier could share it. The spring is still there in the city park, and the story is why the city is called Wine Spring.

What the Guides Miss

1

Three White Camels, One Rigged Verdict

In 39 BCE a Kangju envoy named Yang Bodao brought camels to the Jiuquan governor, who graded three white animals as yellow and lean. The envoy took the complaint to Chang'an, and the court ordered the Dunhuang governor to investigate. The Han bamboo slip that records the case came out of the Xuanquan relay station and now sits in the Gansu Provincial Jiandu Museum.

2

The Wine-Spring Story Dates to the Han, but Not Every Hexi Name Is Chinese

Ying Shao, writing in the late Eastern Han, said Jiuquan took its name from water "like wine". Fudan's Yao Dali thinks most place names in the four Hexi commanderies transcribe older local words, and H. W. Bailey of Cambridge reads Zhangye as Eastern Iranian, meaning "fortified place". Jiuquan came first of the four: the Book of Han says "first the Jiuquan commandery was set up", around 118 to 117 BCE by one modern dating.
