Unit U4: Cobalt, Kilns and Six Hundred Years of Trial and Error

Porcelain has been made at Jingdezhen for around a thousand years. The unit uses the city to teach one idea: what made it able to supply the world was a trade split into a very large number of separate jobs.

Watch the division of labour, not the pots

One worker throws bowls off a cone of clay and does nothing else. Another trims bodies that somebody else threw. Ware dries on trestles, somebody paints, somebody else dips in glaze. Nobody makes a pot from beginning to end. The Jingdezhen ancient kiln page sets out the site and what visitors watch.

What students do

  1. Throw a simple form and compare it with the demonstrator's.
  2. Glaze, and paint under glaze.
  3. Load and open a kiln, with the staff.
  4. Keep a log: what was changed, what happened.

Courses the unit connects to

  • IB MYP materials and change
  • IB CAS (Creativity), because the sessions are hands-on and the log can serve as a reflection record

The school's coordinator confirms the fit against the current course documents. See also IB CAS trip to China.

Where the unit fits in a route

The park takes half a day and the city's kiln sites and studios two days, so Jingdezhen is a leg of its own rather than a stop. No PreeChina student group has done this unit on site yet; it would be drawn with the school and priced before anything is booked.

Fees follow the length of the whole trip, for groups of 10 or more (10 included): USD 100 per person for trips of up to 10 days, USD 150 for 11 to 20 days, and an individual quote beyond 20 days. Hotels, meals, transport, tickets and other trip expenses are separate unless the agreed quotation says otherwise. See the cost page.
