Sample Business Itineraries in China: Five and Seven Days

These are samples of structure, not booked programmes. A real programme is drawn from the group's product and purpose, and the sites are confirmed company by company before anything is priced. Each sample keeps to one category and one cluster, and to two sites a day at most.

Yangtze River Delta, five days: precision manufacturing and equipment

DayPlaceWhat happens
1ShanghaiArrival and transfer. A short briefing on the programme and the site rules.
2SuzhouTwo site visits in precision manufacturing or auto parts. Lunch with the host if it is offered.
3WuxiOne site visit and a supplier meeting. The afternoon is kept free for notes and follow-up.
4ChangzhouTwo site visits in equipment or new-energy materials.
5ShanghaiReview of the week. Departure.

How the cities connect

Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou lie on the same high-speed rail line from Shanghai, so the moves between them are short.

Pearl River Delta, five days: consumer electronics and appliances

DayPlaceWhat happens
1ShenzhenArrival and transfer. Briefing on the programme and the site rules.
2ShenzhenA design and prototyping house in the morning. Huaqiangbei in the afternoon, with a guide for the language of quantity.
3DongguanTwo site visits in moulding and assembly.
4Foshan or ZhongshanCeramics and appliances in Foshan, or lighting and hardware in Zhongshan, chosen by product.
5GuangzhouA wholesale market matched to the product. Departure.

A market inside the programme

Huaqiangbei is an electronics market where counters are also companies. A visit is timed to the market, and the afternoon is the better time to ask a stallholder to sell one piece.

Seven days: the robotics and automation supply chain

DayPlaceWhat happens
1ShanghaiArrival and transfer.
2ShanghaiThe briefing: the layers of the supply chain, the non-disclosure agreement and the site rules. Rest.
3SuzhouComponents layer: precision parts, reducers or actuators, depending on what the group asks and what opens.
4ChangzhouA second components site and a supplier meeting.
5Changzhou to ShenzhenA travel day, kept light.
6ShenzhenElectronic modules, controllers and prototyping.
7ShenzhenReview of the week and departure.

Which sites open

The best-known robot makers are the most visited and the most guarded. This route goes through the supply layers instead: components, modules and prototyping. Which sites receive the group is confirmed company by company, and no company is named here. See access and confidentiality.

Entry

Arrival and departure through ports on the 240-hour transit list may allow visa-free transit, if the onward-ticket condition is met. See visa and invitation.

Adding a fair

Any of the three can be placed before or after a fair. See trade fairs. Fair dates are set by the organisers and are not fixed here.

Background reading on this site

  • What China Makes, and Where. The cluster map: which region and which town makes which product, and what is visitable.
  • Getting around China. Distance is measured in hours: how to move between clusters.
  • China Now. The contemporary industrial landscape, from robots to electric vehicles.

Who this is not for

  • A group that wants four provinces and three industries in one week. A week spent on one cluster teaches more than a week spent on a map.
  • A group that wants guaranteed access to a named maker.
