Traditional Dwellings and Villages in China

This page answers common questions about traditional dwellings and villages in China and maps thirty-nine places: fourteen tulou and diaolou, fourteen ancient villages, nine courtyard houses and old quarters, and two cave dwellings. Each place has a distinctive building tradition that a government or news source describes, and each is one that travellers write about or search for, or one that belongs to a World Heritage property.

Every place has a pin on the map. Dates follow the sources named in each answer. Where sources disagree, as they do on the founding year of Huangling and the centuries of the Fujian Tulou, this page leaves the date out.

This page gathers information that changes rarely. Details were collected in October 2026 and may have changed since. Tickets, opening hours and reservations are not listed here, so contact each venue or check its official website for accurate information.

Questions About Chinese Dwellings

Each answer names its source. Where sources disagree, the answer says so instead of choosing one.

What are the Fujian Tulou?

Earthen houses in south-west Fujian, several storeys high, built on a circular or square plan around an inward-facing courtyard. UNESCO lists 46 buildings and says each could house up to 800 people, usually a whole clan, and that the houses were built for defence. The property was listed in 2008. UNESCO dates the buildings to the 15th to 20th centuries, while the Fujian Provincial Cultural Heritage Bureau gives the 13th to 20th centuries.

UNESCO says they show a fusion of Chinese and Western forms and reflect the role of emigrants from Kaiping in several countries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. China News Service reported in 2007 that some towers were built from plans their owners brought home from abroad, while others followed the owner's own ideas.
