Putuo Mountain (普陀山)
One of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains and the most important pilgrimage site for devotion to Guanyin Bodhisattva in East Asia, Putuo Mountain is an island of 12.5 square kilometers in the Zhoushan Archipelago whose forested hills shelter three major temple complexes — Puji Temple (the most ancient and most significant), Fayu Temple (the largest in scale), and Huiji Temple (the highest in elevation). The finest ocean beach in the Zhoushan Archipelago and one of the best in Zhejiang Province, Thousand Paces Beach (Qianbu Sha) on Zhujiajian Island extends 2.8 kilometers of fine gold-brown sand facing open East China Sea swell — the cleanest and most energetic ocean beach scenery in the province. The island also contains a network of smaller beaches, coastal hiking trails, and viewpoints over the surrounding archipelago. Zhujiajian is directly adjacent to the Putuo Mountain ferry route, making it easy to combine a beach day with the Putuo pilgrimage in a single Zhoushan visit.

Zhoushan Swimming Crab (舟山梭子蟹)
The three-spotted swimming crab (梭子蟹, Portunus trituberculatus) from the East China Sea waters of Zhoushan is considered the finest sea crab in China — a fast-swimming blue crab of considerable size, with sweet white meat and roe of concentrated richness in the autumn season. Eaten steamed, braised with ginger and Shaoxing wine, or simply blanched in salt water and eaten cold with black vinegar, the Zhoushan swimming crab is available at its freshest at the Shenjiamen waterfront restaurants where the boat that caught it may still be docked at the adjacent pier.

The temples of Putuo Mountain maintain a vegetarian culinary tradition of considerable refinement — the consequence of Buddhist dietary restrictions applied to locally available mountain and marine ingredients of excellent quality.
