Why Wenzhou
Why Visit Wenzhou?
Wenzhou is a city of vivid contrasts — one of China’s most entrepreneurially dynamic coastal cities, whose Wenzhou businesspeople have built commercial networks across China and the world, and simultaneously a prefecture of extraordinary natural beauty in its mountainous interior and coastal islands. Its most celebrated natural attraction, Yandang Mountain (雁荡山), presents a volcanic landscape of dramatic originality: sheer basalt cliffs, waterfall-hung rock faces, bizarre peak formations, and ancient temples built into cliff caves in positions of remarkable audacity — all formed from the volcanic eruption remnants of 120 million years ago.
Yandang is designated a UNESCO Global Geopark for its scientific significance as one of the world’s finest examples of Cretaceous volcanic geology — the erosion-sculpted basalt formations preserve the internal structures of ancient volcanic activity with exceptional clarity. The mountain’s most celebrated feature is not its peaks but its “lingfeng” (灵峰) cliff — a vertical basalt face where a Buddhist temple perches in a natural cave 200 meters above the valley floor, accessible via a stairway cut into the cliff face.
The Nanxi River scenic area in Yongjia County provides a complete contrast: a gentle, clear river winding through valley landscapes of extraordinary tranquility, past ancient villages of Song and Ming Dynasty architecture that have survived in near-perfect condition because the valley’s remote beauty attracted literati and artists throughout Chinese history rather than commercial development. The combination of Yandang’s geological drama and Nanxi’s cultural serenity gives Wenzhou a natural and cultural range that few Zhejiang prefectures can match.

Yandang Mountain (雁荡山)
A UNESCO Global Geopark and one of the finest volcanic landscapes in China, Yandang Mountain presents sheer basalt cliffs, dramatic rock formations, cliff-face waterfalls, and ancient Buddhist temples built into natural cave formations in positions of extraordinary height and audacity. The Lingfeng scenic area — where the cliff face rises 200 meters from the valley floor and a Buddhist temple occupies a natural cave halfway up — is the mountain’s most celebrated image. The Dalong Waterfall, falling 197 meters in three cascades, is one of the highest waterfalls in Zhejiang. The entire mountain landscape is the product of 120-million-year-old volcanic activity, sculpted by 100 million years of erosion into forms of extraordinary variety.
Nanxi River Scenic Area (楠溪江风景区)
One of the most tranquil and most culturally layered river landscapes in Zhejiang, the Nanxi River winds 145 kilometers through the mountains of Yongjia County past over 300 ancient villages — many preserving Song and Ming Dynasty architecture in near-perfect condition. The river’s exceptional clarity (it runs over smooth white pebbles through a landscape of great natural beauty) and the quality of the ancient villages along its banks attracted Chinese literati throughout the Tang, Song, and Ming Dynasties; the village of Furong (芙蓉村), with its Song Dynasty layout and well-preserved ancient streets, is the most complete surviving example of Song urban planning in rural Zhejiang.
Jiangxin Island (江心屿)
A small island in the middle of the Oujiang River that flows through Wenzhou city, Jiangxin Island has been one of the most celebrated scenic sites in southern Zhejiang for over a thousand years. The island’s two Song Dynasty pagodas — the East Pagoda and West Pagoda, both dating to the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in the Song — stand at either end of the island as iconic landmarks visible from both river banks. The island’s Buddhist temples, gardens, and the inscriptions of Tang and Song poets who visited here make it the most historically layered urban heritage site in Wenzhou, in a river setting of considerable beauty.
Dalong Waterfall (大龙湫瀑布)
The most spectacular waterfall in Zhejiang Province, Dalong (“Great Dragon Pool”) Waterfall falls 197 meters in three cascades from a natural amphitheater of sheer basalt cliffs at Yandang Mountain — one of the highest waterfalls in eastern China. The waterfall is fed by the mountain’s spring and summer rainfall, reaching its maximum volume and most dramatic appearance from June through September; in late summer and early autumn, the volume is sufficient to produce a permanent mist cloud at the base that creates rainbow effects in afternoon sunlight. The circular cliff amphitheater that surrounds the waterfall — basalt walls rising 300 meters on three sides — creates an acoustic effect of extraordinary power.

Wenzhou Food You Should Try
Wenzhou Seafood (温州海鲜)
Wenzhou’s southern Zhejiang coastal position gives it access to East China Sea seafood of exceptional variety and freshness — the city’s seafood culture is among the most developed on the Zhejiang coast. Wenzhou’s most prized marine products include the swimming crab (梭子蟹) of the outer islands, the locally beloved razor clam (竹蛏), fresh-caught yellow croaker and hairtail, and the Wenzhou oyster (乐清湾生蚝) from Yueqing Bay — the largest oyster-farming bay in Zhejiang, producing oysters of extraordinary size and sweetness. The Wenzhou waterfront seafood restaurants, serving the night’s catch at breakfast hour, are among the most atmospheric seafood dining experiences on the southern Zhejiang coast.
Wenzhou Fish Cake (温州鱼饼·鱼丸)
The most universally eaten street food in Wenzhou: fresh saltwater fish — typically hairtail or yellow croaker — pounded into a smooth paste with salt, starch, and scallion, then shaped into flat cakes (yubbing) or balls (yuwan) and either steamed, deep-fried, or added to clear broth soup. The Wenzhou fish cake tradition differs from the Shanghai or Fuzhou equivalents in the specific fish species used and the ratio of fish to starch — the Wenzhou version is higher in fish content and correspondingly more flavorful and more elastic. Found at breakfast stalls and soup shops throughout the city, they represent Wenzhou’s most democratically accessible culinary heritage.
Wenzhou Rice Noodle Soup (温州猪脏粉)
The most beloved Wenzhou breakfast: thin rice noodles (米粉) served in a clear pork offal broth with pork intestine, liver, and stomach — a combination that sounds challenging but produces a broth of exceptional depth and a filling of satisfying complexity when the offal is properly cleaned and prepared. The Wenzhou version of pig offal noodle (猪脏粉) has a specific local seasoning — more ginger, more black vinegar, and a specific chili paste — that distinguishes it from comparable dishes elsewhere in Zhejiang. Found at breakfast shops throughout the city from 5 AM; the combination of the clean rice noodle texture and the rich, slightly sour broth is one of those specifically local breakfast experiences that Wenzhou residents eat with unwavering devotion.
Yueqing Bay Oyster (乐清湾生蚝)
The oysters farmed in Yueqing Bay north of Wenzhou city are among the largest and most celebrated in Zhejiang Province — raised in the clean, mineral-rich waters of the bay where cold mountain rivers mix with tidal sea water to create an environment of exceptional productivity. The Yueqing oyster reaches sizes that dwarf most other Chinese farmed oysters, with a flavor that combines the sweetness of the bay’s freshwater input with the salinity of the East China Sea. Eaten raw with a squeeze of lime and a dash of chili vinegar at a waterfront oyster bar, or grilled with garlic and butter in the adaptation that Wenzhou’s restaurant culture has enthusiastically adopted, they represent the finest shellfish product on the southern Zhejiang coast.
