Mount Emei is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains and the seat of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra. Monkeys and the sea of clouds at the Golden Summit are common sights on the mountain.
The historic temples include Baoguo, Wannian and Fuhu. Wannian Temple's beamless brick hall holds a Song-dynasty bronze of Samantabhadra riding an elephant. UNESCO lists Mount Emei together with the Leshan Giant Buddha as one site.
Liujiang Ancient Town, 55 km from Leshan, ends the route. The Huaxi River runs through it, with stilt houses and old banyan trees on both banks. The Leshan city guide covers the Giant Buddha and the city.
