Why Visit Turpan?

Turpan grape trellis corridor green vines and brick drying house in the oasis village morning light Xinjiang

Turpan is the place on the northern Silk Road where history is most visible. The Jiaohe and Gaochang ruins are walled cities that grew while caravans crossed the Tianshan foothills, and their earth walls, temple foundations and streets can still be read on the ground.

The basin is why the oasis exists. The Turpan depression lies well below sea level, with very low rainfall and a hot summer, yet the valley is green. Water comes from snowmelt in the Tianshan, carried by the karez, an underground canal system that has watered vineyards for centuries.

What the Guides Miss

1

Turpan Counted 1,237 Karez in 1957, Far More Than Around 1900

The karez kept growing into the twentieth century: about 800 around 1900 and 1,237 in 1957. Upstream shafts run 60 to 70 metres deep, while those near the outlet run about 10 metres, which makes the water look as if it flows uphill. Lin Zexu, exiled here in the 1840s, called it "beyond belief" in his diary and ordered one labourer per 50 mu for summer repairs.

2

Bezeklik's Biggest Murals Were Destroyed in a Berlin Air Raid

"Bezeklik" means "place with painted decoration". The German expedition under Albert von Le Coq cut the walls with saws, and in the 1904 to 1905 season alone shipped 103 crates of antiquities. Thirteen Vow Paintings, one of them 3.6 by 2.3 metres, went to Berlin and were destroyed in the Second World War air raids.
