What Travellers Ask Before Their First Trip to China

PreeChina read 651 Reddit threads written by people planning a trip to China. The question they asked most often was whether their itinerary was too rushed. Trains, guides, getting around, phones and payments came up far more often than safety, food or toilets.

Five findings

  1. "Is my itinerary too rushed?" is the question asked most. 59 posts (9.1%) ask it directly, in a sentence that is a question, and 119 (18.3%) bring up pace in some way. The next most-asked topic, tours, guides and doing it yourself, is asked directly in 38 posts.
  2. Trains are in a third of all plans. 210 posts (32.3%) mention trains, mostly as the way between cities rather than as a worry: only 31 ask a question about them.
  3. Practical setup forms one cluster: getting around cities, the language, phones and apps, visas, paying, and crowds and holidays all sit between 11.1% and 15.5% of posts.
  4. Some well-known worries are rarely raised by the person asking. Safety appears in 3.1% of posts, dietary needs in 4.9%, toilets in 2.8% and hotels that accept foreigners in 2%. Replies bring them up more often than the questions do (see the table below).
  5. Beyond Beijing and Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu and Zhangjiajie are named more often than Xi'an. Beijing is named in 47.9% of posts and Shanghai in 45.2%; Xi'an in 18.1%.

What the person asking writes about

Share of the 651 threads. "Mentioned" counts the title and opening post; "asked" counts only question sentences; "whole thread" adds the replies. The last column links to the PreeChina guide on that topic.

How the study was done

  • Source. Public Reddit posts, collected on 2026-08-22 and 2026-08-23 with seven searches of up to about 250 results each. Each record holds the thread's title, the opening post and the comments shown on the page. Post dates, scores and user names were not kept.
  • Searches. Itinerary and trip planning: China (itinerary OR "trip planning" OR "travel planning"); First time in China: China ("first time" OR "first trip" OR "first visit"); China travel in general: China (travel OR tourism OR trip); Private or custom tours: China ("private tour" OR "custom tour" OR related terms); Experiences and culture: China (experience OR culture OR local OR authentic); Where to go: China (where OR destinations OR cities OR places); Problems: China (problem OR difficult OR confusing OR frustrating).
  • Removing duplicates. 1,766 records came back; 1,599 were different threads once repeats across searches were removed, including 39 cases where the same text was posted to two communities.
  • Who is in the sample. Threads from communities about travel in China (such as r/travelchina and r/chinatravel) were all kept. Threads from general travel communities (such as r/travel and r/solotravel) were kept only when the title names China or a Chinese place. Threads from other communities were left out (940 threads), for example news, politics, photography and communities for people who live in China. Posts written to sell a guiding or planning service were also left out: a word rule flagged 12 and, after reading each one, 8 were removed. That leaves 651 threads: 547 from China travel communities and 104 from general travel communities.
  • What is counted. Only the words of the person who started the thread (the title and the opening post), because that is what they themselves were thinking about. A topic counts as mentioned when its words appear anywhere in that text, and as asked when they appear in a sentence that is a question. Replies are counted separately, in the column "whole thread", for comparison only.
  • How topics are found. Each topic is a list of words and phrases (for example Didi, taxi, metro, subway for getting around). Phrases that misled in testing were removed, such as hot pot under weather or a Mandarin Oriental hotel under language.
  • Checking the rules by hand. For each topic, up to 20 matching threads were drawn at random and read. The column "matches checked" shows how many were really about the topic. Hotels that accept foreigners was the weakest: about half of its few matches were about something else, so its true share is lower than shown.
  • When the posts were written. The age of the oldest comment on each thread gives a lower bound. By that measure 80.5% of the threads were started in the twelve months before the collection date, and 113 are older.
  • Trip reports. Only 30 of the 651 threads were written after a trip. That is too few to measure what surprised people, so this study does not report it.

What these numbers cannot show

  • Reddit users are not all visitors. They lean towards English speakers who travel independently and plan online.
  • Search results depend on how Reddit ranks them; this is not a random sample of every post.
  • Word rules miss questions that are phrased in other ways, and they cannot tell a worry from a plan. The "asked" column is the closer measure of worry, and it is small for most topics.
  • The numbers describe what people wrote, not what happened on their trips.
