How PreeChina Compiles China by the Numbers

Every figure on these pages comes from a named public source and carries its data year and the date PreeChina checked it. These are the rules behind them.

How the numbers are compiled

  • One source per table. When countries are ranked, one international source is used for all of them (for example FAO for food, UNESCO for heritage, CTBUH for buildings), so the numbers measure the same thing. A country's own statistics may give a different figure; where the gap is large, the page says so.
  • Primary sources only. Figures are read from the publisher's own data or report, not from summaries. When an original is no longer online, PreeChina uses an archived copy of it and says so.
  • Only what was checked is ranked. If the top four could be confirmed, the table shows four.
  • No estimates presented as statistics. If a figure is PreeChina's own calculation (for example a share of the world total), the page says how it was calculated.
  • Dates on everything. Each page shows the data year and the date PreeChina last checked it. Every page is reviewed once a year.
  • Place names follow the source's own list.
