Why Visit Shigatse?

🏯

Seat of the Panchen Lamas

Tashilhunpo was founded in 1447 and has been the residence of the Panchen Lamas since. Its Maitreya hall holds a gilded bronze figure 26.2 metres high, cast in the 1910s and said to be among the larger of its kind anywhere.

🕍

A Mandala Visitors Can Climb

The Kumbum at Gyantse, finished in 1427, is a nine-tier stupa with 77 chapels stacked inside it. Walking up through them takes visitors through the stages of a mandala in order, with the wall painting of each level intact.

⛰️

Everest From the North

The road from Tingri reaches Rongbuk Monastery and the north base camp at over 5,000 metres. On a clear morning the whole north face stands above the valley with no approach walk at all, which is why this side draws people who are not climbers.

📚

The Library at Sakya

Sakya Monastery, founded in 1073, keeps a wall of stacked scripture some sixty metres long and ten high behind its assembly hall. The volumes have not been fully catalogued, which is why the place is sometimes called a second Dunhuang.

🗡️

A Fort From 1904

A British expedition under Younghusband fought its way to Gyantse in 1904 and shelled the fort above the town. The dzong stands on its rock with the breach still visible, and the town below it kept its old street plan.

Top Attractions in Shigatse

Tashilhunpo Monastery, Shigatse
Monastery

Tashilhunpo Monastery (扎什伦布寺)

A walled monastic town on the hillside above Shigatse, with the Maitreya hall, the Panchen tomb stupas and a large assembly courtyard. Several hundred monks are in residence and the kora path runs right around the outside wall.

Monastery

Palkhor Monastery and the Kumbum (白居寺 · 十万佛塔)

A walled compound at Gyantse holding halls of three different Tibetan Buddhist schools side by side, which is unusual, and the Kumbum stupa in the middle of it. Bring a torch: the upper chapels have no lighting.

Historic town

Gyantse Old Town and Dzong (江孜古城 · 宗山)

A Tibetan town at 4,040 metres that was not rebuilt around its monastery, with several thousand households in flat-roofed courtyard housing. The fort on the rock above can be climbed and gives the layout of the valley and its barley fields.

Monastery

Sakya Monastery (萨迦寺)

A fortress-walled monastery on the valley floor, its buildings painted in the grey, red and white stripes of the Sakya school. The assembly hall stands on columns of whole tree trunks and the scripture wall is behind it.

Mountain

Rongbuk Monastery and Everest Base Camp (绒布寺 · 珠峰大本营)

A high monastery in the world sits in the valley below the north face, with the base camp a few kilometres further up. Visitor access is by park shuttle from the gate. Nights here are above 5,000 metres and very cold in any season.

Landscape

Karola Glacier and Peiku Tso (卡若拉冰川 · 佩枯错)

The Karola ice tongue comes down almost to the Gyantse road at around 5,000 metres, one of the few glaciers in Tibet visible from a car. Peiku Tso is a turquoise lake off the Friendship Highway with Shishapangma behind it.

What to Eat in Shigatse

Tsampa (糌粑)

Barley roasted and ground, then kneaded in the bowl with butter tea into a stiff dough. It is the staple here and it travels: a bag of flour and a bowl is a meal anywhere. Visitors will be shown how to mix it the opening time.

Butter Tea and Sweet Tea (酥油茶 · 甜茶)

Butter tea is churned with salt and yak butter and tastes closer to broth than to tea. Sweet tea, with milk and sugar, came by way of Nepal and India and is what the teahouses sell by the thermos. Both help with the altitude.

Tibetan Noodles (藏面)

Short wheat noodles, part-cooked and then dropped into a clear yak broth to order, with a little chopped meat and a spoon of chilli paste. Breakfast in every town, and the bowls are small enough that people order two.

Bainang Vegetables (白朗蔬菜)

Bainang county has built greenhouses across the valley floor and now grows much of the fresh vegetables eaten in Tsang. Before that almost everything came up the road from Sichuan. It is why a salad exists on menus at 4,000 metres.

Cultural Experiences in Shigatse

Walk the kora at Tashilhunpo

The circuit runs clockwise outside the wall past long banks of prayer wheels and takes about an hour at a slow pace. Go in the early morning with the pilgrims. Walk the same direction as everyone else and leave the wheels turning as visitors pass.

Climb the Kumbum to the top

Nine tiers, 77 chapels and a stair that narrows as visitors go. The murals get older and better further up, and the top gives visitors the fort and the whole Gyantse valley. Allow an hour and take it slowly at this altitude.

Be at Rongbuk before sunrise

The north face clouds over many afternoons and is usually clearest in the opening hour of light. Guesthouses at Rongbuk are basic, unheated and often full, so this needs arranging through the tour operator rather than on arrival.

Catch Tibetan opera at the heritage centre

The city's intangible heritage centre schedules folk opera troupes at least twice a month, drawing on three schools with national heritage status. Performances are long and audiences come and go, which is how it is normally watched.

When to Visit Shigatse

April, June

Clear and dry before the monsoon, with the ideal odds on Everest. Nights are still below freezing at altitude.

July, August

Warmest, greenest and wettest, with the peaks often hidden. The Gama Valley trek on the east side of Everest is closed as of March 2026, and its monsoon window was the dangerous one even before that.

September, October

The other clear window and a particularly reliable for mountain views, with barley harvest in the valleys and very cold nights.

November, March

Cold, bright and empty, with some high passes and the Everest road subject to closure. Tibet permits are periodically halted in late winter; check before arranging flights.

Shigatse is in Tibet, in Southwest China.
