A visit to Mount Tai sounds like one thing: the climb. The path from Red Gate to the South Heavenly Gate runs about 7,000 steps. This route adds the places around the climb, so the day covers the mountain and the temples that grew up beside it.
Mount Tai is the first of the Five Great Mountains. UNESCO listed it in 1987 as one of the earliest sites inscribed for both culture and nature. From Qin Shi Huang onward, emperors held the Feng and Shan ceremonies here, and stone inscriptions line the path from the Han dynasty to today.
Dai Temple is where rulers made offerings before they climbed. Lingyan Temple, 38 km from Jinan, ranks among the four great temples of the Tang dynasty. Shuilianxia, a canyon scenic area 28 km out, opens the day. The Jinan city guide covers the city itself.
