Hebei · City Guide
Langfang, the Gap Between Beijing and Tianjin.
Overview
Why Go
Yanjiao, in Sanhe County, touches the Beijing boundary. Several hundred thousand people live there and work in the capital, crossing a provincial line twice a day. The bus lines start before five in the morning.
Langfang is cut in half by Beijing and Tianjin territory, so Sanhe, Dachang and Xianghe are an exclave separated from the rest of the prefecture. Very few Chinese cities are shaped like this.
Shengfang in Bazhou was a marsh and canal port with merchant courtyard houses, and it keeps two large family compounds, a lantern tradition and a wind-and-percussion society, both listed as national intangible heritage.
A large immersive theatre complex built around Dream of the Red Chamber opened here in 2023, with several main stages and dozens of small ones running over a hundred shows a day. It is a new commercial project, not a heritage site.
Xianghe meat pies are a north China standard that this county gave its name to, and Dachang is a Hui autonomous county, so the halal side of Hebei cooking is stronger here than in much of the province.
See
A former marsh port in Bazhou with the Wang and Zhang family compounds, a temple, old lanes and the lantern workshops. Quiet outside the lantern festival. Half a day.
A very large immersive theatre park with four main stages and dozens of small rooms, running continuously through the day. A full day, and ticketing covers a fixed number of main shows alone.
A commuter town of high-rise blocks directly across the boundary from Beijing, with a bus interchange that fills before dawn. It is a piece of urban geography rather than a sight. Two hours.
A walled temple in the old town with tiered halls and courtyards, busiest at the lunar new year and during the lantern festival. An hour, and it pairs with the merchant houses.
A mosque in the Hui autonomous county at Dachang, built in Chinese timber style with a carved brick gateway. Dress modestly, ask before photographing and avoid prayer times. Half an hour.
The North Canal runs through Xianghe on the Grand Canal World Heritage line, with towpath walking and restored banks. It is a stretch of working waterway rather than a monument. Ninety minutes.

Eat
A very thin dough wrapped round beef and onion and fried flat until the skin is crisp and almost transparent, cut into wedges. The county gave the dish its national name and the shops make it to order.
Beef braised in a spiced stock and sliced cold, from the Hui butchers and kitchens of Dachang. Sold by weight from shop counters and eaten with flatbread rather than rice.
Shengfang sat on marshland and built its name on freshwater crab and fish. The marsh has shrunk but the restaurants still cook the same way: steamed plain, vinegar and ginger on the side.
Malt sugar pulled into layers, rolled in sesame and cut into short sticks that shatter into flakes. Made for the winter and the new year and sold loose from paper. Very sweet and very dry.
Do
Stand at the Yanjiao interchange between five and seven and watch a provincial boundary function as a commute. It is the many informative twenty minutes anywhere in this prefecture.
The Wang and Zhang houses are the surviving evidence that this was a wealthy port. Look at the brick carving on the screen walls, which is where the money went.
Shengfang's lantern making and its wind-and-percussion society both come out on the fifteenth of the opening lunar month. It is the one night the old town is full.
Twenty minutes to Beijing and twenty-five to Tianjin means a room here costs a fraction of either and reaches both. It is a particularly practical reason many travellers end up in Langfang.
When
Mild, dry and green before the summer heat, with canal walking at its peak. The strongest window of the year.
Hot, humid and hazy on the plain, with thunderstorms. The theatre complex and the halal kitchens are the indoor options.
Clear, cool and the ideal air of the year, with crab season at Shengfang. The other good window.
Cold, dry and grey, with the Shengfang lanterns at the opening full moon and the sesame candy in the markets.
