Yunnan · Karst Cones Standing in a Wetland
Puzhehei Karst Lakes (普者黑)
The same limestone cones as Guilin, standing in a basin of lakes, lotus ponds and paddy instead of along a river. Boats go through the lotus rather than past the hills.

Why Go
Guilin’s Rock, Laid Out Flat
1. Why it looks familiar and is not
Anyone who has seen a photograph of the Li River knows this rock: limestone dissolved down over a very long period until what is left stands as isolated cones with flat ground between them. Puzhehei Karst Lakes is the same process in a different setting. Instead of a river cutting through the towers, there is a basin of shallow lakes and wetland with the cones standing in it, and the water is the surface you move on rather than the line you follow.
The practical difference is that you are inside the landform rather than passing through it. Boats work across the basin in several directions, between and around the cones, through channels cut in the lotus. On a river you look at the hills; here you go between them.
2. The lotus is the season
From late June the ponds fill with lotus and the boat routes run through them, which is the condition every photograph of this place was taken in. Outside that window the basin is still handsome and the cones are still there, but the thing that makes it distinct is not.
The villages are Yi and Zhuang, and the boats are worked by people who live in them. In summer the local custom of throwing water at each other from passing boats is applied enthusiastically to visitors, which is either the highlight of the trip or a reason to keep a camera in a dry bag, depending on the person.

The catch. This is a domestic destination and it became one very fast after a television series was filmed here in 2017. In lotus season the main routes are busy and the village shorefronts are commercial. The quiet version exists and it is a matter of which channels your boatman takes, which is worth arranging rather than leaving to the ticket desk.
Orientation
Boats, Villages and One Hill
The standard day is a boat circuit through the wetland with stops at one or two of the lakeside villages, plus a climb up Qinglong hill for the view down over the basin. The view from above is what explains the shape of the place, and doing it before the boat rather than after makes the boat legible.
Routes change with the water level and with the season. In high summer the lotus channels are the point; in spring and autumn the boats work more open water and the trip is shorter.
Practical
Things Worth Knowing
Come for the lotus or do not come
Late June to August. At most sites the season is a preference. Here it decides whether you see the place or a lake.
Expect to get wet
Water throwing between boats is a local summer custom and visitors are included. Dry bags for anything electronic, and take it in the spirit intended.
Go up Qinglong hill first
The viewpoint above the basin shows the layout, and the boat makes much more sense afterwards.
Negotiate the boat route
The default circuit is the busy one. Asking for the quieter channels costs nothing and changes the day.
Timing
When to Go
| Season | The case for | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Late June to August | Lotus in flower, the boat channels running through it, and the villages at their liveliest | The busiest months, hot, and afternoon rain is common |
| September to October | Rice ripening across the basin and much thinner crowds, with the cones at their clearest | The lotus is over. The first week of October is the national holiday |
| March to May | Green coming back, comfortable temperatures, and very few visitors | No lotus, and the water is lower so some channels are unusable |
| November to February | Quiet and cool, and the basin reads as farmland, which it is | Cold mornings, bare ponds, and reduced boat operations |
Context
Why the Cones Are Separate
Cone karst forms where thick limestone, heavy rainfall and a long period of stability let water dissolve the rock along its joints. Over millions of years the gaps widen into valleys and the remaining rock is left standing as separate hills. Southern China has the this landscape over a very large continuous area, and Guilin is its best-known corner.
What makes Puzhehei Karst Lakes different is drainage. The basin floor here sits at the level of the water table, so instead of a river cutting a single channel there is a spread of shallow lakes, swamp and seasonal flooding between the cones. That is why the land use is paddy and lotus rather than dry field, and why boats rather than roads are the traditional way across.
The population of the basin is Yi and Zhuang, and the festival calendar is theirs. The Yi face-painting festival held here in summer draws people from across the region and is a working festival rather than a performance, though it now runs alongside the tourist season and the two have influenced each other.

Where to Base
Wenshan (文山)
Qiubei county town sits beside the basin and has the beds; Wenshan, about two hours south, has the transport. Most visitors come up from Kunming, which is a four-hour road day each way and argues strongly for staying two nights rather than one.
Southeastern Yunnan is the quiet corner of the province. The Yuanyang rice terraces are within a long day’s drive to the west, and the two pair well as a five-day loop out of Kunming.

Worth two days in lotus season and worth skipping outside it unless you are passing. Come between late June and August, go up the hill before you get in a boat, ask for the quiet channels, and accept that you will be thrown water at.
