A School, a Gorge, and a Working Monastery

1. What Zhiyi did here

By the sixth century Chinese Buddhism had a problem of abundance: a large and inconsistent body of translated scripture, arriving out of order over several centuries, with no agreed account of how the parts related. Zhiyi, working on this mountain, produced one. He organised the teachings into a sequence, argued that apparent contradictions were stages addressed to different audiences, and placed the Lotus Sutra at the top of the arrangement.

That framework is the Tiantai school, and it was the first comprehensive system of its kind produced in China rather than imported. Guoqing Temple at the foot of the mountain was founded in 598, just after his death, and it has been the school’s principal house since.

2. It travelled, and it is still in use

In 804 a Japanese monk named Saicho arrived with an embassy, studied here, and went home to found Tendai on Mount Hiei outside Kyoto. Tendai became one of the major schools of Japanese Buddhism and the training ground for the founders of several others. The Korean Cheontae school traces to the same source.

The practical consequence is that Guoqing receives Japanese and Korean pilgrims as a matter of course, and the temple treats itself as an ancestral house rather than as a monument. It is a working monastery, quiet, with monks living in it, and it is deliberately unspectacular.

The catch. The 5A area is not one place. It is a scattering of temples and gorges across a large county, and moving between them without a car is slow. Guoqing itself is modest by design and anyone arriving expecting scale will be disappointed; the interest is what happened here, not what stands here.

Four Places, One County

Guoqing Temple sits at the foot of the mountain near the county town and is the fixed point. Shiliang, with the stone beam and the waterfall, is up in the massif and is the main natural site. Guoqing takes an hour or two; Shiliang takes half a day with the walk.

Two further areas, Qiongtai gorge and the Huading summit, take a day between them and are worth it only if you have the time and the transport. Without a car, pick Guoqing and Shiliang and accept that the rest is out of reach.

Things Worth Knowing

Go to Guoqing early

Morning service is the reason to be there and the temple is quietest before the coaches reach it. It is also very cheap to enter, unusually so for a site of this standing.

It is a working monastery

Monks live and practise here. Photography inside halls is restricted, voices carry, and the expectation is that visitors behave as they would in any place of worship.

Wet rock, all year

The gorge paths are stepped and permanently damp under tree cover. Grip matters more than on a dry mountain.

A car unlocks the county

The sites are far enough apart that public transport eats the day. This is one of the places where hiring a driver changes what is possible.

When to Go

Season The case for The catch
April to May Green at its strongest, the falls running hard, and comfortable walking temperatures The wettest stretch of the year. Rain rather than showers
September to November The most settled weather and the clearest air, with colour on the slopes late in the period The first week of October is the national holiday
June to August Full water in the gorges and the temple grounds deep in shade Hot and humid, and typhoons reach this coast in late summer
December to March Very quiet, and the temple is at its most monastic Cold and damp, and snow occasionally closes the higher roads

Why the Mountain and Not the Capital

Doctrinal work of this kind was usually done near power, and Zhiyi had access to it: he taught at the southern court before withdrawing here. The move to the mountain was deliberate, and the school that resulted has a strong practical and meditative emphasis alongside the textual one, which is generally read as reflecting where it was assembled.

The temple’s fortunes followed the usual pattern for Chinese monasteries: destruction, rebuilding, imperial patronage and neglect in turn. The present buildings are largely Qing with later restoration, laid out on the original terraced plan up the hillside, and the pagoda outside the walls is considerably older than the halls.

What makes the place unusual is the continuity of the lineage rather than of the buildings. A school worked out on this hillside in the 590s is still being practised in Japan, and the monks who come back here to say so are part of why Guoqing has been maintained rather than turned into a museum.

Other Stops on the Same Trip

Spot · 68 km

Shenxianju (神仙居)

Volcanic rock pinnacles and glass walkways in Xianju county, a dramatic contrast to the quiet at Guoqing.

A full day. The most popular site in the prefecture.

Spot · 96 km

Yandang Mountain (雁荡山)

Rhyolite peaks, a very tall seasonal waterfall and an evening rock-shadow show, down the coast in Wenzhou.

Two days if you go. Pairs well with this one.

Spot · 86 km

Tianyi Pavilion (天一阁)

A private Ming library in Ningbo that has held its collection since the sixteenth century.

See Ningbo.

Taizhou (台州)

Tiantai is a county of Taizhou, and Taizhou prefecture is the practical unit: Shenxianju in Xianju county, the coast, and this mountain are all inside it. The county town at Tiantai has beds and is fifteen minutes from Guoqing.

Most visitors come from Shanghai or Hangzhou by rail. Three days covers the mountain and one of the neighbouring sites without rushing, and that is a better shape than a day trip.

Guoqing Temple in the morning

The terraced halls, the pagoda outside the wall, and the service. A working monastery rather than a monument, and quiet before the coaches.

Very low entry cost. Go early.

On site · half day

Shiliang gorge

The stone beam over the waterfall and the stepped path through the gorge below it.

Wet rock throughout. Proper shoes.

Guided · full day

The lineage, explained

What Zhiyi actually did, why it mattered, and how it reached Mount Hiei, told on the ground at the temple where it happened.

We arrange this. See experiences.

Worth a full day and worth it mostly for Guoqing. Come if the history of Buddhism in East Asia interests you, in which case this is one of the more significant places in China and one of the least visited by foreigners. Come for scenery and Shenxianju down the road will serve you better.
