Anqing is western Anhui’s most historically significant city — a Yangtze River port that served as the provincial capital of Anhui for over 150 years (1760–1938) and was the center of the Self-Strengthening Movement’s most ambitious military-industrial project under Li Hongzhang and Zeng Guofan. Its most spectacular natural attraction, Tianzhu Mountain (天柱山), rises to 1,489 meters in a landscape of dramatic granite formation — sheer rock faces, bizarre peak shapes, deep gorges, and ancient forest — that earned it UNESCO Global Geopark status and the poetic title “Wannan First Mountain.” The mountain’s geological diversity, with granite formations that include some of the finest examples of ultra-high-pressure metamorphic rock in the world, makes it as scientifically significant as it is scenically magnificent.

Tianzhu Mountain (天柱山)
A UNESCO Global Geopark and one of the most dramatically scenic mountains in Anhui Province, Tianzhu Mountain rises to 1,489 meters in a landscape of extraordinary geological complexity: sheer granite faces, bizarre weathered rock formations given fanciful names (the “Celestial Column” peak that gives the mountain its name, the “Flying Stone,” the “Natural Picture Gallery”), deep gorges with crystal streams, and ancient forest that covers the lower slopes. The mountain’s scientific significance — it preserves some of the world’s finest examples of ultra-high-pressure metamorphic rock, formed when oceanic crust was buried to depths of 120 kilometers before being rapidly exhumed — equals its visual drama. Huangmei Opera (黄梅戏)
One of China’s five major opera traditions and the cultural art form most associated with Anqing, Huangmei opera developed in the Anqing area over the past 200 years from folk song traditions of the Yangtze valley and Dabie Mountain communities. Distinguished by its melodic accessibility — the tunes are immediately appealing even to listeners with no previous opera experience — its romantic storylines, and the distinctive “flat-tone” vocal style of its female roles, Huangmei opera is the most widely performed opera outside Beijing Opera in contemporary Chinese cultural life. The Anqing Grand Theatre offers regular evening performances; the Huangmei Opera Museum documents the tradition’s history and its most celebrated performers and productions.
Yingjiang Temple (迎江寺)
One of the most significant riverside Buddhist temples on the Yangtze River, Yingjiang Temple has overlooked the river from the Anqing riverbank for over a thousand years. The temple’s Zhenfeng Pagoda — a seven-story octagonal brick pagoda rising 60 meters above the river bank — is Anqing’s most iconic landmark, visible from river traffic for miles in both directions. The temple complex combines active Buddhist worship with considerable architectural heritage: the main hall preserves Ming Dynasty construction and the riverside courtyard provides one of the finest Yangtze River panoramas in the city. The view from the pagoda platform at sunset — the Yangtze turning gold, the far bank disappearing into haze — is the most atmospheric urban river experience in Anqing.
Anqing Old City & Yangtze Waterfront (安庆老城·长江风光带)
Anqing’s old city preserves a remarkably intact Republican-era urban fabric — the consequence of its role as Anhui’s provincial capital through much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, which funded construction of substantial civic and commercial architecture that has survived relatively intact. The Delong Street historic district, with its merchant houses, guild halls, and early 20th-century commercial buildings, provides a walking tour of considerable historical depth. The Yangtze waterfront promenade, extending along the river from Yingjiang Temple, offers views of the same broad river that Zeng Guofan’s Anhui Army used as the base for its suppression of the Taiping Rebellion in the 1860s.

Anqing Yangtze Hairy Crab (安庆大闸蟹)
The Yangtze River at Anqing produces hairy crab of a quality comparable to the most celebrated sources on the river — the same species, the same clean Yangtze water, with golden roe of considerable richness in October and November. Anqing’s position on the upper Yangtze, where the river is narrower and faster-flowing than at its delta, produces crabs of slightly firmer texture and more concentrated flavor than the lower-river equivalents. Steamed whole and eaten with black vinegar and warm Shaoxing wine at a riverside restaurant beneath the Zhenfeng Pagoda, the Anqing hairy crab is one of the city’s most specifically seasonal pleasures.
Tianzhu Mountain Wild Fungi (天柱山山珍)
The forests of Tianzhu Mountain produce wild mushrooms of excellent quality in summer and autumn — porcini, hazel mushroom, wood ear, and the prized pine mushroom in the higher elevations. Simmered in a clear broth with local mountain spring water and fresh ginger, or braised with local pork and dried chili in a clay pot, the Tianzhu mountain mushrooms form the backbone of the mountain farmhouse cuisine available at guesthouses and restaurants in the Tianzhu scenic area. The full mountain food experience — wild mushroom broth, bamboo shoot stir-fry, mountain stream fish, and fresh corn — is one of the finest mountain farmhouse meals in western Anhui.
Anqing Sesame Candy (安庆芝麻糖)
One of Anqing’s most beloved traditional confections and a souvenir that every local brings back from the city: crispy pulled sesame candy made from pure sesame seeds and maltose syrup, pulled and folded until it achieves a light, airy crunchiness quite different from the dense sesame brittle found elsewhere in China. The Anqing sesame candy has been made by specialist confectioners in the old city for over 200 years; the traditional pulling technique — requiring two people to stretch the cooling syrup repeatedly until it aerates — is itself a performance. Available at specialist shops throughout the old city, sold in cylindrical tins that make ideal travel-friendly gifts.
Yangtze River Fish (长江鱼鲜)
Anqing’s Yangtze River location gives it access to freshwater fish of considerable variety and quality — mandarin fish (guiyu), freshwater bream, and the Yangtze yellow catfish that is prized throughout the river’s middle reaches for its firm, sweet flesh. Braised whole in a clay pot with locally produced soy paste, fresh chili, and Anhui-style pickled vegetables, or simply steamed with scallion and ginger, the Anqing river fish appears on every local restaurant menu and is available fresh at the daily fish market below the Yingjiang Temple. The view of the Yangtze through the restaurant window while eating its fish creates a context of unusual directness and completeness.
