Why Mudanjiang
Why Visit Mudanjiang?
Mudanjiang is a city of two extraordinary seasonal personalities, each drawing visitors from across China for entirely different reasons. In autumn and summer, the draw is Jingpo Lake — China’s largest mountain barrier lake, formed 10,000 years ago when lava flows from volcanic eruptions in the Zhangguangcai Range dammed the river valley, creating a lake of extraordinary natural beauty: 45 kilometers long, surrounded by old-growth deciduous forest, and connected to the famous Diaoshuilou (“Falling Water Pavilion”) Waterfall — the widest underwater volcanic waterfall in the world, where the lake drains over a basalt lava lip 12 meters high.
In winter — specifically December through February — the draw is entirely different: Snow Town (Xuexiang) in the Zhangguangcai Mountains, a remote logging village at 1,200 meters altitude that receives an average of 2 meters of snow annually, producing the most aesthetically perfect deep-winter snow landscape in China. The village’s traditional wooden houses, buried to their eaves in white powder snow, the forest trails between them weighted with impossible accumulations, and the golden light of winter sunrise turning everything amber — these images have been the most shared winter photographs in Chinese social media for over a decade, and the village’s transformation into a luxury tourist destination has not entirely destroyed the beauty that made it famous.
For international travelers, Mudanjiang offers two world-class experiences in a single prefecture: a volcanic lake of scientific and scenic interest without equal in Heilongjiang, and a winter village landscape of fairy-tale perfection. The Mudanjiang River freshwater fish and the forest food culture add an excellent culinary dimension to both seasonal visits.

Jingpo Lake (镜泊湖)
China’s largest mountain barrier lake and one of the most scientifically interesting lakes in northeastern China, Jingpo — “Mirror Lake” — was created 10,000 years ago when volcanic lava flows dammed the Mudanjiang River valley, creating a 45-kilometer lake of exceptional beauty. The surrounding old-growth forest of maple, oak, and birch turns extraordinary colors in September and October; the lake’s clear water reflects the forest colors in autumn, creating the mirror-like effect that gives it its name. The geological setting — ancient lava flows, basalt columns, and the dramatic Diaoshuilou Waterfall where the lake drains over a volcanic rim — provides a scientific dimension that reinforces the aesthetic appeal.
Diaoshuilou Waterfall (吊水楼瀑布)
One of the most geologically extraordinary waterfalls in China, Diaoshuilou — “Hanging Water Pavilion” — is the widest underground volcanic waterfall in the world: the entire Jingpo Lake drains over a basalt lava rim 12 meters high and up to 40 meters wide, plunging into a cave system beneath the volcanic rock. The sight of the full lake surface seeming to disappear over a cliff edge into thundering mist, with the surrounding lava formations and old-growth forest, creates a landscape of overwhelming power. In summer flood season (July–August), the waterfall reaches maximum volume and width; in spring and autumn, the surrounding forest adds seasonal color to the volcanic scene.
Snow Town — Xuexiang (雪乡)
China’s most photographed winter landscape and one of the most aesthetically compelling snow environments in East Asia, Snow Town (Shuangfeng Forest Farm Village) sits at 1,200 meters in the Zhangguangcai Mountains, receiving 2 meters of annual snowfall that buries its traditional wooden farmhouses and pine forest trails in immaculate white powder. The village’s famous “mushroom snow” formations — snow accumulations on rooftops and branches that take sculptural forms of extraordinary delicacy — are at their finest in January. Despite significant commercialization since its rise to internet fame, Snow Town’s core visual landscape retains a genuine beauty that explains its enduring appeal.
Jingpo Lake Underground Forest (地下森林)
One of the most unusual landscapes in Heilongjiang Province, the Jingpo Lake Underground Forest is a series of volcanic craters — ranging from 50 to 400 meters in diameter and 50 to 100 meters deep — that were created by volcanic explosions 10,000 years ago and subsequently colonized by forest growing from the crater floors upward. Standing at the crater rim and looking down 100 meters to a forest canopy 30 meters below, where birch and spruce grow at the base of volcanic walls, creates an entirely vertiginous and entirely beautiful perspective on geological time and ecological resilience.

Mudanjiang Food You Should Try
Jingpo Lake Freshwater Fish (镜泊湖全鱼宴)
The volcanic lake’s pure, cold, mineral-rich water produces freshwater fish of extraordinary quality — white fish (Coregonus), silver carp, and the prized Jingpo lake trout that feeds on the lake’s abundant cold-water invertebrates. A full Jingpo fish banquet — multiple preparations of the lake’s fish from simple grilled to slow-braised in soy and vinegar — is the definitive dining experience of Mudanjiang, served in lakeside restaurants with the lake visible through the window. The volcanic water’s mineral content gives the fish a flavor that no artificially farmed equivalent can replicate.
Snow Town Farmhouse Meals (雪乡农家菜)
The mountain farmhouses of Snow Town serve a winter cuisine of singular heartiness — slow-cooked pork and sauerkraut in enormous clay pots, potato and eggplant braised with local mountain mushroom, and corn bread baked in a wood-fired kang (traditional heated bed) oven. Eating at a Snow Town farmhouse table while the temperature outside drops to minus-25°C and the snow piles against the window is one of those experiences of physical comfort and cultural immersion available only in this remote, deeply northeastern context. The portions are legendary; the atmosphere — smoky, warm, and familial — is unrepeatable.
Zhangguangcai Mountain Mushrooms (张广才岭山珍)
The Zhangguangcai Mountains surrounding Mudanjiang produce wild fungi of comparable quality to the Lesser Khingan — porcini, hazel mushroom, pine mushroom, and black wood ear harvested from primary forest that has never been sprayed or managed. Dried in the autumn sun and sold in cloth bags at every market in the city, these mushrooms are the canonical Mudanjiang souvenir; but their finest expression is in the mountain restaurants of the Jingpo Lake area, where they appear in mushroom hotpot, mushroom-enriched fish broth, and the rich mushroom-pork clay pot that defines autumn eating in southeastern Heilongjiang.
Mudanjiang River Crayfish (牡丹江小龙虾)
The Mudanjiang River and its cold clear tributaries produce freshwater crayfish of the same exceptional quality as the Ussuri system — raised in unpolluted mountain water with abundant natural feed, developing a sweetness and texture that warm-water farmed crayfish cannot approach. Available in summer from June through August at riverside restaurants throughout the city, prepared in a garlicky Sichuan-influenced sauce or steamed simply with salt and wild herbs, the Mudanjiang river crayfish is the most popular summer evening dining experience in the city — outdoor tables, cold beer, and piles of crimson shellfish in the warm Heilongjiang summer air.
