Why Visit Chifeng?

Chifeng — “Red Mountain” — is one of the most historically significant cities in northeastern China. It was here, in the Niuheliang archaeological site 5,500 years ago, that the Hongshan Culture flourished — one of the earliest complex societies in Chinese prehistory, whose extraordinary jade artifacts, including the famous C-shaped jade dragon now considered a precursor to the Chinese dragon symbol, represent the first known flowering of Chinese artistic civilization. The Hongshan jade dragon, discovered in 1971, has since become a national cultural symbol; visiting the sites and museum that contextualize it is to encounter Chinese civilization at its absolute dawn.

Chifeng’s natural landscape is equally extraordinary. The Keshiketeng World Geopark — China’s first UNESCO-designated geopark — encompasses an astonishing variety of geological features within a single area: volcanic crater lakes, granite peak forests, wind-eroded stone formations (the famous “Arshan Stone Forest”), hot springs, and some of the finest sub-alpine grassland in Inner Mongolia. Adjacent, the Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm — the world’s largest artificial forest, planted by hand between 1962 and 1982 on bare sand dunes by a team of soldiers and foresters — is an extraordinary story of ecological restoration on an almost incomprehensible scale.

For international travelers, Chifeng offers a combination rarely available in a single prefecture: Neolithic archaeology of global significance, a UNESCO World Geopark of extraordinary geological variety, vast grassland landscapes, and an accessible forest wilderness — all within a region that receives almost no international visitors. The contrast between the ancient and the reborn, the volcanic and the pastoral, gives Chifeng a depth of character that rewards curiosity at every turn.

Keshiketeng World Geopark (克什克腾世界地质公园)

China’s first UNESCO World Geopark, Keshiketeng encompasses an extraordinary concentration of geological wonders within a single highland area: volcanic maar lakes (including the spectacular Dalinghe Lake, a perfectly circular crater lake surrounded by birch forest), the Arshan Stone Forest of wind-eroded granite formations, the Haggenmiao sand dunes transitioning to grassland, and the highest concentration of hot springs in Inner Mongolia. The autumn transformation — when the birch forest around the crater lakes turns gold — is one of the finest landscape spectacles in northeastern China, entirely unknown to international visitors.

Cradle of Civilization

Hongshan Culture & Niuheliang Site (红山文化·牛河梁遗址)

The Niuheliang archaeological site, 130 kilometers from Chifeng city, is one of the most significant Neolithic discoveries in East Asia — a complex of ceremonial platforms, goddess temples, and stone-mound altars built by the Hongshan Culture over 5,500 years ago. The jade artifacts excavated here — including the iconic C-shaped jade dragon now considered the earliest representation of the Chinese dragon — are displayed in the Chifeng Museum and represent the first flowering of a distinctly Chinese aesthetic sensibility. The site itself, set in a dramatic highland valley, provides the geographical context for why this remote area became the cradle of what would become the Chinese cultural tradition.

World’s Largest Forest

Saihanba Forest Farm (塞罕坝机械林场)

One of the most remarkable environmental restoration stories of the 20th century: between 1962 and 1982, a team of 369 workers planted trees by hand across 93,000 hectares of barren sand dunes on the Mongolian plateau, creating what is now the world’s largest artificial forest. Today Saihanba — “beautiful highland” in Mongolian — is a UNESCO Ecosystem Restoration Flagship and a landscape of extraordinary beauty: dense pine and larch forests, alpine meadows, mirror-calm lakes, and a story of collective human determination that is simultaneously humbling and inspiring. Designated a UN-recognized model for global ecosystem restoration in 2021.

Highland Grassland

Bashang Grassland (坝上草原)

On Chifeng’s border with Hebei Province, the Bashang plateau grassland — shared between Inner Mongolia and Hebei — offers some of the most accessible and most photogenic highland steppe scenery in northeastern China. The combination of open grassland, birch forest patches, wildflower meadows, and the dramatic light of the elevated plateau creates landscapes that photographers specifically target in August (wildflower peak) and October (golden birch). Horse riding, ger stays, and Mongolian barbecue dinners under the stars are available from family-run camps throughout the summer and autumn seasons.

Chifeng Food You Should Try

Chifeng Mongolian mutton hotpot copper pot grassland lamb clear broth Inner Mongolia

Chifeng Mutton Hotpot (赤峰涮羊肉)

Eastern Inner Mongolia’s take on the great Mongolian mutton hotpot tradition: Chifeng’s plateau-raised lamb, fed on highland grasses that include wild herbs and mineral-rich meadow plants specific to the Keshiketeng area, produces a mutton of distinctive fragrance and sweetness. Swirled in a clear, mild broth in the traditional copper chimney pot and dipped in a sesame-paste sauce enriched with fermented tofu and wild chive flower, it is the meal most associated with Chifeng for Chinese visitors who return each autumn specifically to eat it.

Chifeng buckwheat noodles cold noodle dish with lamb sauce highland grain Mongolian Han food

Chifeng Cold Noodles (赤峰荞麦面)

At the meeting point of Mongolian and Han Chinese culinary traditions, Chifeng produces a distinctive cold noodle culture built around highland buckwheat and oats. Chifeng’s version of cold noodles — served with a sauce of minced lamb, garlic, black vinegar, and wild cumin — has a more Mongolian character than the equivalent dish in Shanxi, the lamb fat enriching the buckwheat’s earthiness in a combination that feels entirely natural to the northeastern plateau. Found in small restaurants throughout the old city and the surrounding county towns.

Chifeng wild mushroom pine mushroom stir fry Saihanba forest produce local highland cuisine

Saihanba Forest Mushrooms (塞罕坝野蘑菇)

The vast pine and larch forests of Saihanba produce an extraordinary autumn harvest of wild fungi — pine mushrooms, golden chanterelles, and porcini of exceptional size — that make their way to restaurants throughout Chifeng prefecture in September and October. Stir-fried simply with garlic and local sunflower oil, or slow-braised with highland lamb in a clay pot, they carry a concentrated forest flavor that is the defining seasonal ingredient of the Chifeng autumn table. The pine mushrooms of Saihanba, exported across China as a premium ingredient, are more affordable and incomparably fresher eaten at source.

Chifeng sunflower oil and roasted sunflower seeds Inner Mongolia agricultural produce local specialty

Chifeng Roasted Sunflower Seeds (赤峰瓜子)

Chifeng is one of China’s largest sunflower-producing regions, and the local roasted sunflower seeds — larger, plumper, and more intensely flavored than most commercial varieties — have been a national snack institution for decades. The sunflower oil used in all Chifeng cooking gives the region’s stir-fries and noodle dishes a distinctive golden richness. The seeds themselves, roasted with salt and five-spice in traditional clay ovens, are sold in paper bags throughout the city’s markets and are the canonical Chifeng souvenir — eaten while walking, talking, and watching the world go by, a habit as ingrained in Chifeng culture as tea drinking is elsewhere.
