Why Visit Anshan?

Anshan is known to most Chinese people primarily as a steel city — the birthplace of the Anshan Iron and Steel Group, the largest steel producer in China for much of the 20th century. Yet within and around this emphatically industrial city lie two heritage experiences of genuine first rank: Qianshan Mountain, one of the finest Taoist and Buddhist sacred mountain landscapes in northeastern China, and the jade carving culture of Xiuyan County, which produces some of the most technically accomplished jade work in the country.

Qianshan — “Thousand Mountain” — rises to 708 meters, its granite peaks threaded with ancient temple complexes, stone-carved inscriptions, and hiking trails that traverse a mountain landscape of considerable drama and natural beauty. The temples include structures dating to the Tang Dynasty; the mountain’s combination of Taoist and Buddhist sacred sites, rock-face inscriptions, and forested summit walks makes it one of the most culturally layered mountain destinations in Liaoning. In autumn, the maple and oak forest turns red and gold against the grey granite, producing one of the finest seasonal landscapes in the northeast.

The jade carving tradition of Xiuyan, 85 kilometers east of Anshan city, stretches back over 300 years and produces artisans whose technical mastery — carving nephrite jade into landscapes, figures, and abstract forms of extraordinary refinement — is recognized as among the finest in China. The Xiuyan jade market is one of the most absorbing and most genuine craft markets in northeastern China, where master carvers work in open workshops and the range of jade quality and style is incomparably broader than any city gallery could provide.

Sacred Mountain

Qianshan Mountain (千山)

One of the finest sacred mountain landscapes in northeastern China, Qianshan — “Thousand Mountain” — takes its name from the hundreds of granite peaks that crowd its ridgelines, creating a dramatic skyline of spires, columns, and rounded domes above the forested slopes. Five major temple complexes — including the Tang Dynasty Longquan Temple and the grand Wuliang Guanyin Temple — are distributed across the mountain, connected by stone-paved trails of varying difficulty. The mountain is simultaneously a Taoist sacred site, a Buddhist pilgrimage destination, and a national scenic area, with the combination of rock scenery, ancient temples, and seasonal forest color making it the finest single day-trip destination from Shenyang.

Xiuyan Jade Carving (岫岩玉雕)

Xiuyan County east of Anshan is the source of Xiuyan nephrite jade — one of the four great jade varieties of China — and the center of a jade carving tradition stretching back over 8,000 years (archaeological evidence of Xiuyan jade use dates to the Xinglongwa Culture of 6000 BC). Today the county’s jade market and carving workshops house hundreds of master artisans working in open studios, producing pieces ranging from tourist-grade keepsakes to gallery-quality sculptures that command prices comparable to the finest Hetian white jade. Visiting the market and watching masters at work — the grinding, the drilling, the patient revelation of form from stone — is one of the most absorbing craft experiences in northeastern China.

Natural Hot Springs

Tangganzi Hot Springs (汤岗子温泉)

One of the four great hot spring resorts of China according to traditional classification, the Tangganzi thermal springs emerge from volcanic bedrock at temperatures between 40°C and 72°C, with mineral compositions historically considered therapeutic for joint conditions, skin ailments, and cardiovascular health. The springs have been used medicinally since the Ming Dynasty; during the Japanese colonial period (1905–1945) they were developed into a major resort complex whose original architecture — a blend of Japanese, European, and Chinese styles — partially survives. The therapeutic reputation of the springs remains strong among Chinese visitors; the resort facilities have been extensively modernized while preserving the original spring pools.

Nanshan Park & Jade Buddha Temple (南山公园·玉佛苑)

Within the city itself, Nanshan Park on the southern edge of the urban area combines a pleasant forested hill with the Yufo Yuan — Jade Buddha Garden — a complex of Buddhist halls centered on a magnificent jade Buddha carved from a single piece of Xiuyan nephrite weighing 260 tonnes, one of the largest jade sculptures in China. The park’s elevated walkways provide sweeping views across Anshan’s industrial cityscape, providing an unexpectedly striking juxtaposition of natural greenery, Buddhist devotion, and the smokestacks of one of China’s great steel cities that defines the character of Anshan as a destination.

Anshan Food You Should Try

Qianshan Temple Vegetarian Cuisine (千山素斋)

The Buddhist and Taoist temples of Qianshan serve a vegetarian cuisine of considerable refinement — developed over centuries by monastic communities who learned to extract maximum flavor from the mountain’s wild herbs, mushrooms, and highland vegetables without any animal products. Mountain mushroom broth with hand-rolled noodles, wild herb dumplings, tofu prepared in a dozen textures, and preserved mountain vegetables pickled in local mountain spring water: eaten in a temple dining hall with the sound of chanting from the adjacent hall, the Qianshan temple vegetarian lunch is one of those meals that stays in the memory long after the specific dishes have blurred.

Anshan Barbecue (鞍山烧烤)

Anshan’s steel worker culture produced a robust outdoor barbecue tradition that remains one of the most genuine and most unpretentious dining experiences in Liaoning. Lamb ribs, pork belly, kidney, and scallion skewers grilled over charcoal with generous applications of cumin, chili flakes, and sesame seeds; beer served in large bottles at outdoor tables; the smoke and noise of a full barbecue street on a summer evening. The Anshan barbecue streets near the old steel district are unpretentious, boisterous, and entirely authentic — a window into the working-class culture that built northeastern China.

Dongbei Cold Dishes (东北凉菜)

Northeastern Chinese cold dish culture is one of the great unsung traditions in Chinese cuisine — and Anshan’s working-class restaurants serve it at its most generous and most unpretentious. Smashed cucumber with garlic and sesame oil; pickled cabbage with chili and vinegar; cold pork ear with coriander and black vinegar; tiger-skin peppers charred and dressed with soy and sesame. These dishes, eaten as appetizers before the hot barbecue arrives, represent a distinctly northeastern palette — sharp, cooling, intensely flavored, and designed to stimulate appetite rather than satisfy it. Every table orders them; they are the unacknowledged foundation of the meal.

Anshan Hawthorn Products (鞍山山楂)

The hills surrounding Anshan produce excellent hawthorn berries (shanzha) — the bright red fruit whose intensely sour-sweet flavor is the foundation of some of northeastern China’s most distinctive food products. Tanghulu (hawthorn skewers dipped in hard sugar syrup) are the canonical street snack; hawthorn jam, hawthorn cake (shanzha bing), and hawthorn-infused liquor are the local specialties. The hawthorn harvest in October coincides with Qianshan’s autumn foliage, and buying freshly made tanghulu from a street vendor at the mountain gate while watching the maple forest turn red is one of those small, complete pleasures that defines travel in northeastern China.
