China Visa and Permits: What to Arrange Before You Book

01Read This Before You Book

What has to be arranged before booking a trip to China?

Everything else on this site can be fixed after you arrive. This page cannot. An entry category you do not qualify for, a permit that takes two weeks, a border pass that has to be applied for in person before you get near the border: each of these ends a plan rather than inconveniences it, and each has a lead time measured in days or weeks.

The structure is worth seeing before the detail. Entry into China is one decision. Entry into two specific parts of China is a second, separate decision made by different offices with their own paperwork. A visitor who confuses the two arrives legally in the country and then finds they cannot board the train.

Three things determine whether the trip is possible at all. Whether your nationality has a visa-free route in or you need to apply. Whether any part of your itinerary sits in Tibet 西藏. Whether any part of it sits in a designated border management area. Answer those three before booking flights, because two of them affect what you can book.

Every list on this page moves. The visa-free country lists have been revised repeatedly since 2023, and every revision so far has added countries. Figures here were checked on 13 September 2026 and the official page is linked every time, which is the only sentence on this page worth more than the numbers.

02Visa-Free, Three Lists

Which countries can enter China without a visa in 2026?

The National Immigration Administration publishes three visa-free routes, and they are not variations on one scheme. Different country lists, different lengths of stay, different conditions. Being on one list says nothing about the other two.

Unilateral visa-free entry covers citizens of fifty countries for stays of up to thirty days, for tourism, business, family visits and transit. The list runs to thirty-five countries in Europe, six in the Americas, two in Oceania and seven in Asia. This is the simplest route: you arrive, you are admitted, there is no application.

The 240-hour transit exemption covers fifty-seven countries as of 20 August 2026, when Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were added. It requires a confirmed onward ticket to a third country within 240 hours and works only at designated ports of entry. Ten days is enough for a real trip, and the condition to watch is the third country: returning to where you came from does not qualify.

Hainan 海南's thirty-day exemption covers sixty-one countries for entry through Hainan Province, and it is the widest list of the three because it is the narrowest in geography.

What this means for your trip: check your own nationality against the current page rather than against any summary, this one included. The lists and the eligible ports sit at nia.gov.cn, and they have been revised several times a year. The world page explains why entry policy is structured in tiers like this.

The three visa-free routes, as published on 2026-09-13
Route Countries Stay Condition
Unilateral visa-free 50 Up to 30 days None; arrive and be admitted
240-hour transit 57 (since 2026-08-20) Up to 240 hours Onward ticket to a third country; designated ports only
Hainan 61 Up to 30 days Entry through Hainan ports

03The M Visa

What does an M business visa for China require?

The M visa M签 is the trade and commerce category, and its distinguishing requirement is an invitation letter from inside China. The China Consular Service Network states that the letter must carry three blocks of information, and an incomplete letter is the usual reason an application stalls.

The invitee block carries name, gender and date of birth. The visit block carries purpose, arrival and departure dates, the places to be visited, the relationship with the inviter and who is paying. The inviting unit block carries the company name, contact phone, address, official seal, and the signature of the legal representative or the designated inviter.

That third block is the one that takes time on the Chinese side. A company seal and a legal representative's signature involve people who are not the person you have been emailing, so asking for the letter a week before an application is asking late.

Applications go through the China Online Visa Application System at consular.mfa.gov.cn, with the material list published at cs.mfa.gov.cn. Processing time varies by consulate, and no single figure covers all of them.

What this means for your trip: if your visit is commercial and your nationality has a visa-free route, check which activities that route permits before relying on it. The unilateral exemption names business among its purposes; the decision about whether a specific set of meetings, a factory audit or a contract signing fits is the consulate's and not this page's. The industry page explains why a domestic inviter sits at the centre of the business visa system.

04Tibet

How does a foreign visitor get a Tibet Travel Permit?

Tourism in the Tibet 西藏 Autonomous Region requires a Tibet Travel Permit, and you cannot apply for one yourself. It is arranged through a travel agency in Tibet holding the relevant qualification. Travellers join an organised group, generally two or more people; a solo traveller may be able to join an existing group through an agency, and that is a question to settle in advance, never an assumption to travel on.

Processing takes seven to fourteen working days by the standard agency figure, with no expedited channel, and slows during the May to October peak. That lead time is the reason this page exists before the booking page.

Since March 2026 the original paper permit is required for both air and rail entry. Electronic copies, photographs and photocopies are not accepted at boarding or check-in. A permit that exists as a PDF on your phone is not a permit at the gate, and this is a recent change that older guidance does not reflect.

Materials are short: the passport data page, the valid Chinese visa page or the passport alone for visa-free nationals, and a confirmed itinerary. The itinerary requirement is worth reading twice, because it means the route is fixed before the permit is issued, not after.

Guidance is published by the Tibet Autonomous Region Department of Culture and Tourism at wlt.xizang.gov.cn. The beliefs page explains why the region runs a separate permit regime.

05Border Areas

Which parts of China need a border area permit?

An electronic Border Management Area Pass has been in use since 15 April 2026, and the electronic part does not extend to you. Mainland residents apply online. Foreign nationals, overseas Chinese 华人华侨 and residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan apply in person at a county-level or higher public security exit-entry administration office, or at a designated police station.

The pass is free and typically valid for one to three months. It is required for entry into designated border management areas, and the one most visitors meet is Tashkurgan 塔什库尔干 County in Kashgar 喀什 Prefecture, Xinjiang 新疆, on the road toward the Pakistan border. On the application, that destination is written as Kashgar Prefecture, Tashkurgan County.

What this means for your trip: the application happens inside China, in the right place, before you travel to the border. That usually means a stop in a prefecture-level city with the relevant office, built into the itinerary, not discovered at a checkpoint. Budget a half day.

The announcement sits with the National Immigration Administration at nia.gov.cn. The peoples page explains why certain border counties carry an extra layer of paperwork.

06Festivals and Religious Sites

Do monasteries and temples close during festivals?

This is the one item on this page that no office will confirm for you in advance. During major religious festivals, some monasteries and temples close or cap visitor numbers. The dates move each year with the lunar or Tibetan calendar, and as of 13 September 2026 no single official source publishes a unified calendar of which site closes when.

What this means for your trip: a festival date is a reason to check, and not a reason to avoid. Festival periods are when these places are most worth seeing and least predictable to visit. The check is the site's own official channel or the local cultural and tourism bureau, made close to the date, not at booking time.

This matters more in Tibet 西藏 than elsewhere, because of what it interacts with. A permit with a fixed itinerary plus a monastery that closes for three days is a combination worth resolving before the permit is issued. The beliefs page explains why religious sites manage visitor numbers at all.

07What This Page Is Not

What does this visa page not cover?

  • It is not a visa service and it does not tell you whether you will be granted one. That decision belongs to a consulate, which sees your file and your history. This page names the category, the documents and the office.
  • It is not current by virtue of being published. Every number here carries the date it was checked. The visa-free lists in particular have been revised several times a year since 2023, always by adding countries, which means an old version of this page understates your options rather than overstating them.
  • It does not cover work, study or residence. Everything here is aimed at a visit. A Z, X or residence permit involves a different set of offices and a different set of obligations after arrival.
  • It does not cover Hong Kong and Macao. Both run their own entry rules, and travel between them and the mainland is a border crossing with its own requirements.
