Why Xinxiang
Why Visit Xinxiang?
Xinxiang is Henan Province’s best-kept outdoor secret. Just an hour north of Zhengzhou, the flat Central Plains abruptly give way to the southern escarpment of the Taihang Mountains — one of China’s great geological barriers — and the landscape transforms overnight into a world of vertical canyon walls, hidden waterfalls, mist-filled gorges, and mountain villages that have changed little in centuries.
The South Taihang scenic belt running through Xinxiang’s northern counties contains some of the most dramatic canyon terrain in Central China: Baligou’s deep gorge and cascading falls, the Wanxianshan massif with its extraordinary cliff-carved road, and the Baoquan reservoir whose emerald waters mirror an amphitheatre of forested slopes. These landscapes draw millions of Chinese visitors every year yet remain almost entirely unknown to international travellers — giving Xinxiang a quality of genuine discovery that more famous destinations have long since lost.
The city itself carries historical depth too: the Bigan Temple honours one of Chinese history’s great martyred officials; the Luwang Mausoleum preserves Ming Dynasty imperial burial culture at an impressive scale; and the markets and street food lanes of Xinxiang city offer some of the most honest, affordable, and flavourful Henan cuisine anywhere in the province — anchored by the region’s celebrated braised noodle soup that has sustained the people of the Central Plains for generations.
Must-See Sights
Top Attractions in Xinxiang
Baligou Canyon (八里沟景区)
The most celebrated canyon in the South Taihang range, Baligou cuts eight li (four kilometres) into the limestone massif in a succession of narrowing gorges, hanging valleys, and waterfall chambers. Cliff-face walkways bolted to the canyon walls allow visitors to traverse terrain that would otherwise be impassable, and at the gorge’s deepest point a waterfall drops unbroken for over a hundred metres into a mist-filled pool. In spring the falls run full and white; in autumn the canyon walls turn gold and red.
Wanxianshan & Guoliang Village (万仙山·郭亮村)
One of China’s most remarkable feats of village determination — in 1972, the thirteen men of Guoliang village spent five years hand-carving a 1.2-kilometre road tunnel through a sheer vertical cliff face using only hammers and chisels, connecting their sky-high village to the world below for the first time. The road, known as one of the most dangerous in China, now draws visitors from across the country who come to walk the cliff edge, peer through the tunnel’s unglazed windows into the void, and find the village that refused to be cut off.
Baoquan Scenic Area (宝泉景区)
Set at the foot of the South Taihang escarpment, Baoquan reservoir fills a natural mountain basin with deep emerald water that mirrors the forested slopes and limestone peaks surrounding it on three sides. Cable cars ascend to ridge-top viewpoints above the waterline, and boat trips across the reservoir in autumn — when the hillsides ignite in red, orange, and gold — produce some of the most photographed scenery in northern Henan. The reservoir’s walking trails connect to the wider Taihang mountain network.
Bigan Temple (比干庙)
Built to honour Bigan — the loyal Shang Dynasty official who remonstrated with the tyrant King Zhou and was executed for it, becoming one of Chinese history’s most revered martyrs of integrity — the Bigan Temple in Weihui county is one of the oldest continuously venerated memorial sites in China, with origins dating to the Zhou Dynasty. Ancient cypresses over a thousand years old shade the ceremonial courtyards, and the temple is also considered the ancestral hall of the Lin family surname, drawing diaspora visitors from across Southeast Asia.
Luwang Mausoleum (潞王陵)
The finest Ming Dynasty imperial mausoleum in Henan Province, Luwang Mausoleum is the burial complex of Zhu Chang-fang, Prince Lu — a grandson of the Wanli Emperor — constructed between 1608 and 1641 at a scale that speaks to the late Ming’s extravagant funerary culture. The spirit road lined with stone officials, animals, and mythical beasts leads through ancient pine and cypress groves to a burial mound and underground palace complex of considerable archaeological richness, offering a rare window into Ming aristocratic life and death in Central China.
Phoenix Mountain (凤凰山景区)
Rising along the South Taihang ridge system northwest of Xinxiang city, Phoenix Mountain is the region’s premier destination for autumn foliage — a ridge-walking landscape where maple, oak, and sumac turn the hillsides into layered bands of red, orange, and amber from mid-October onward. The summit ridge trail follows the mountain’s distinctive profile and rewards hikers with panoramic views across the Taihang escarpment to the south and the flat Central Plains stretching to the horizon to the north — the physical boundary between mountain and plain made visible in a single glance.
Culinary Highlights
What to Eat in Xinxiang
Xinxiang Braised Noodles (新乡烩面)
Henan’s most iconic dish and Xinxiang’s daily staple — broad, hand-pulled wheat noodles simmered directly in a milky white broth made from lamb bones slow-cooked for eight hours until the collagen dissolves and the stock turns opaque and rich. Served in a basin-sized bowl with dried lily flowers, black fungus, tofu skin, and a scatter of fresh coriander, Xinxiang Huimian is considered by many Henan people to be the finest regional variation of the dish — slightly thicker noodles, slightly richer broth, and always eaten for breakfast.
Xinxiang Spiced Beef (新乡牛肉)
The Weihui and Changyuan counties of Xinxiang have produced some of the most prized spiced braised beef in Henan for centuries — whole joints slow-cooked in a master brine of soy, star anise, cinnamon, clove, and Sichuan pepper until the meat pulls to a deep garnet colour and the flavour concentrates to an intensity that plain roasting cannot approach. Eaten cold, sliced thin across the grain and laid over chilled cucumber with a drizzle of chilli oil, it is the definitive Xinxiang cold appetiser.
Xinxiang Fermented Fish (新乡糟鱼)
A preserved fish tradition with roots in the Yellow River fishing culture of northern Henan — whole freshwater fish cured in a mixture of fermented grain lees, salt, and spices, then pressed and aged until the bones soften completely and the flesh takes on a complex, deep umami character quite unlike anything in mainstream Chinese cuisine. Served cold from traditional ceramic crocks, Xinxiang zaogyu is one of those hyper-local specialities that locals take for granted and visitors discover with genuine surprise.

Cultural Experiences in Xinxiang
Guoliang Cliff Road Walk
Walk the hand-carved cliff road that thirteen Guoliang villagers spent five years cutting through sheer rock — peering through unglazed window openings in the tunnel wall into drops of several hundred metres, then emerging onto the cliff-edge village where farmers still tend terraced plots above the canyon and the views stretch across the entire South Taihang range.
Taihang Canyon Rafting
Descend the mountain streams of the South Taihang in a rubber raft through a succession of rapids, calm pools, and narrow canyon passages — sheer limestone walls rising on both sides, the water cold and clear from mountain springs, and the canyon echoing with the sound of water on rock. The best rafting runs in the Xinxiang canyon belt operate from late spring through early autumn.
Taihang Terrace Viewing
The mountain villages of northern Xinxiang maintain ancient terraced field systems carved into the South Taihang slopes over centuries — stone-walled plots following every contour of the hillside, planted with millet, corn, and autumn vegetables. At harvest time, when the terraces turn gold tier by tier down the mountainside and farmers move through the rows with hand tools, the scene is a living agricultural landscape of exceptional beauty.
Henan Folk Festival Performances
Xinxiang’s temple fairs and seasonal festivals preserve a living tradition of Central Plains folk performance — stilt-walking troupes, lion and dragon dance teams, drum ensembles, and the spectacular high-wire acrobatics for which Henan Province is nationally celebrated. Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival bring the most elaborate performances to the city’s main squares and temple courtyards.

Best Time to Visit Xinxiang
| Season | Highlights | Weather |
|---|---|---|
| 🌸 Spring (Apr–May) |
Baligou waterfalls at peak flow from winter snowmelt; wildflowers blooming on canyon slopes and cliff ledges; Wanxianshan mountain views clearest before summer haze; terraced village fields newly planted with vivid green shoots; ideal hiking conditions on all South Taihang trails; Bigan Temple ancient cypresses in fresh growth; crowds manageable before summer peak season | 12–24 °C (54–75 °F). Pleasant and mild with occasional spring showers. Light rain jacket useful for canyon walks where waterfall spray adds to natural moisture. Canyon trails can be muddy after rain — waterproof footwear recommended. Morning mist in gorge bends creates excellent photography conditions. |
| ☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug) |
Lush green canyon walls at their most vivid; rafting season in full operation; Baoquan reservoir swimming and boating; mountain villages 5–8 °C cooler than the Zhengzhou plain — a genuine highland escape from Central Plains summer heat; Phoenix Mountain ridge walks in green forest canopy; canyon waterfalls still running well through July | 24–34 °C (75–93 °F) in the city; Taihang mountain areas 22–28 °C. Occasional heavy summer thunderstorms July–August — flash flood risk in canyon areas; check conditions before gorge walks. Peak domestic tourism season — Guoliang Village and Baligou very crowded on weekends; weekday visits strongly recommended. |
| 🍂 Autumn (Sep–Nov) |
The definitive season for Xinxiang — South Taihang autumn foliage peaks mid-October to early November with maple, oak, and sumac turning the canyon walls to bands of red and gold; Baoquan reservoir at its most photogenic; Phoenix Mountain ridge walks in peak colour; harvest season brings terraced fields to golden abundance; canyon air crisp and clear for long-distance views; Guoliang cliff scenery most dramatic against autumn sky | 8–24 °C (46–75 °F). Crisp, dry, and clear through October — ideal for all outdoor activities. November brings rapid cooling; warm jacket essential from late October. First frost on higher Taihang peaks by mid-November. Best photography light of the entire year; golden hour on canyon walls in October is extraordinary. |
| ❄️ Winter (Dec–Mar) |
South Taihang under snow transforms into a monochrome ink-wash landscape of exceptional beauty; Guoliang cliff road dramatically altered by ice and snow hanging from the carved tunnel walls; Baligou canyon frozen waterfalls form spectacular ice columns; near-zero tourist crowds; Luwang Mausoleum and Bigan Temple most atmospheric in winter light; Spring Festival folk performances in Xinxiang city at their most elaborate from late January | -5–8 °C (23–46 °F). Cold with regular sub-zero nights from December through February. Snow on Taihang peaks and canyon rims from December; canyon trails icy and potentially hazardous — crampons needed for cliff walkways. Guoliang Village road may close in severe ice conditions. City centre comfortable with standard winter clothing. |
