Why Wuxi
Why Visit Wuxi?
Wuxi is one of the most naturally beautiful cities in Jiangsu Province — a lakeside city whose western and southern edges are defined by Taihu Lake, China’s third-largest freshwater lake, in a landscape of water, hills, and islands that has been the subject of Chinese landscape painting for centuries. The city’s most famous seasonal spectacle — the cherry blossom display at Yuantouzhu (鼋头渚) Peninsula each April, when thousands of cherry trees flower simultaneously above the lake’s surface — is considered the finest cherry blossom landscape in China outside of parks designed specifically for the purpose, combining the blossoms with Taihu Lake views in a composition of extraordinary natural beauty.
The Lingshan Giant Buddha (灵山大佛) — a 88-meter bronze seated Buddha on Lingshan Hill south of the city — is one of the tallest bronze statues in the world and the centerpiece of a Buddhist cultural complex of considerable scale. Completed in 1997, the statue overlooks lotus ponds, prayer pavilions, and the Brahma Palace, whose interior features an automated lotus-opening ceremony that is one of the most spectacular mechanical/theatrical Buddhist experiences available in eastern China.
Wuxi’s clay figurine (惠山泥人) tradition — producing brightly colored, highly detailed clay figures of theatrical characters and auspicious subjects that have been the city’s most distinctive craft export since the Song Dynasty — and its silk culture (the city was one of the Yangtze Delta’s primary silk production centers for over a millennium) add cultural depth to a city whose most immediate appeal is its lakeside natural beauty.

Yuantouzhu — Cherry Blossom Peninsula (鼋头渚)
The most celebrated cherry blossom landscape in China outside of dedicated cherry blossom parks, Yuantouzhu Peninsula extends into Taihu Lake in a forested promontory where over 10,000 cherry trees — planted since the 1990s and now reaching maturity — flower simultaneously each April in a pink-and-white canopy above the lake’s surface. The combination of the blossom, the lake views, and the gentle Jiangsu spring light creates a landscape of extraordinary beauty; the peak flowering window of 1–2 weeks in early April draws visitors from across China. The peninsula also offers pleasant walking through classical garden spaces, pavilions, and the famous “Taihu Xian Jing” (太湖仙境) lake viewing platform.
Lingshan Giant Buddha (灵山大佛)
One of the tallest bronze statues in the world and Wuxi’s most imposing landmark, the 88-meter Lingshan Buddha sits on Lingshan Hill overlooking lotus ponds and the Brahma Palace in a Buddhist cultural complex of considerable scale. The statue itself — requiring 700 tons of copper and bronze in its construction — is most impressive from the approach across the lotus pond, where its full height becomes apparent above the surrounding landscape. The Brahma Palace below the statue contains the “Nine Dragons Bathing the Prince” ceremony and the automated Thousand-Petal Lotus opening — a theatrical Buddhist experience combining light, music, and mechanical choreography that is genuinely spectacular and unlike anything available at more traditional Buddhist sites.
Taihu Lake (太湖)
China’s third-largest freshwater lake, covering 2,338 square kilometers on the borders of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, Taihu has defined the landscape, food culture, and aesthetic sensibility of the surrounding cities for millennia. The Wuxi section of the lake provides the most accessible scenic experience: boat tours from the city’s lakeshore connect the scenic peninsulas and the Taihu Islands (太湖仙岛), where pavilion architecture and Buddhist temples occupy small islands of considerable beauty. The lake is at its finest at dawn (when the mist creates an ink-painting landscape) and at sunset (when the water surface turns gold and the fishing boats silhouette against the light).
Huishan Ancient Town (惠山古镇)
The most heritage-rich historic district in Wuxi, Huishan Ancient Town at the foot of Huishan Hill preserves a remarkable collection of ancestral halls — over 100 clan temples from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, forming the most concentrated assembly of ancestral hall architecture in Jiangsu Province. The town is also the birthplace and primary production center of the Huishan clay figurine (惠山泥人) — brightly colored, highly detailed clay figures whose most famous subject is the “Fat Baby” (大阿福) that has been Wuxi’s most recognizable souvenir since the Song Dynasty. Active clay figurine workshops offer demonstration and purchase opportunities alongside the ancestral hall heritage walk.

Wuxi Food You Should Try
Taihu Hairy Crab (太湖大闸蟹)
The freshwater hairy crab from Taihu Lake is one of the most prized seasonal ingredients in Jiangsu Province — the same species as the even more famous Yangcheng Lake crab, raised in Taihu’s clean, aquatic-vegetation-rich shallow waters and available in October and November with golden roe of considerable richness. The Wuxi tradition of eating Taihu hairy crab is one of the most elaborate in the Yangtze Delta: eaten steamed with warm Shaoxing wine, the crab is dismantled with a set of eight small tools (蟹八件) designed specifically for the purpose — cracker, mallet, pick, and scissors of miniature scale — a ritual of considerable patience and considerable reward.
Wuxi Sweet Spare Ribs (无锡酱排骨)
The most celebrated dish in Wuxi cuisine and one of the most beloved braised pork preparations in Jiangsu Province: pork spare ribs braised for three to four hours in a sauce of soy, sugar, Shaoxing wine, and five-spice until the meat falls from the bone and the sauce reduces to a glossy, caramel-dark glaze of extraordinary sweetness and depth. The Wuxi version of braised ribs is notably sweeter than Shanghai’s and most other Jiangnan preparations — a consequence of the local preference for sweeter flavors that runs throughout Wuxi cooking. Available at traditional restaurants throughout the city and packaged for travel at specialist food shops.
Taihu Water Shield (太湖莼菜)
One of the most delicate and most specifically Taihu local ingredients available in Wuxi: the water shield (莼菜, Brasenia schreberi) — a freshwater aquatic plant whose young shoots and leaves are surrounded by a transparent, gelatinous mucilage of extraordinary slipperiness and a flavor of clean, mild freshness. Harvested from the shallows of Taihu Lake from spring through early summer, the water shield is served in a clear broth of chicken stock with ham and scallion in a soup of considerable elegance, or blanched and dressed with sesame oil and light soy. The combination of the gelatinous texture and the clean flavor makes it one of those uniquely local ingredients that cannot be substituted or replicated outside the lake environment.
Wuxi Soup Dumplings (无锡小笼包)
Wuxi’s version of the Jiangnan soup dumpling is slightly sweeter than the Shanghai original — the pork filling seasoned with a small amount of sugar in the Wuxi culinary tradition — and the broth inside is correspondingly richer and more caramel-toned than the cleaner Shanghai version. Available at traditional dumpling restaurants throughout the city, the Wuxi xiaolongbao is best appreciated in the context of a full Wuxi breakfast: dumplings followed by the local sweet congee and topped with the crispy fried dough that constitutes the most complete version of a Wuxi morning meal. The combination of sweet pork filling, rich broth, and delicate wrapper creates a dumpling of distinctive local character.
